Is that mellow enough for you?
Sergeant Sergeant
The matter is urgent
Poor man don't know who he is
And gonna confide in me
Tell him I'm somebody else
Tell him I'm somebody else
Tell him I'm somebody else
Tell him I'm somebody else
My friend John
Says he's gone
Never gonna come back
Don't know who he is today
Don't care if he's on the right track
Sergeant Sergeant
Confide in me
Sergeant Sergeant
Confide in me
My friend Joe
I call him George
To Harry and his buddies
Had some trouble with his misses
And he talked to me yesterday
Said it won't go away
I said, tell her you are somebody else, start today
Tell her you are somebody else, start today
Tell her you are somebody else, start today
Tell her you are somebody else
Trouble gonna go away
Trouble gonna go away
{guitar solo}
My friend Joe
Had a turned-up toe
Who was talking with my dear friend Reggie
A knock came a-knocking
Bacardi-on-the-rocking
Lord the conversation suddenly went dead
Sergeant Sergeant
The matter is urgent
Poor man don't know who he is
Help me out…
Entre differences
Est bien arrangé
Tell him I'm somebody else
Tell him I'm somebody else
Tell him I'm somebody else
Tell him I'm somebody else
Sergeant Sergeant
Confide in me
Sergeant Sergeant
Come fighting me…
sitenote:
This is a transcription of a video recording. The original plan was to release Glasgow Walker with Sergeant, Sergeant as track #10. The record company decided later on to change this track for You Don't Know What Love Is.
Eventually it was included as a bonus track on the One World, One John DVD.
John talks about the origins of the lyric on the Tell Them I'm Somebody Else video.
Reggie Hastings also remembers the occasion: "Sergeant, Sergeant is about an incident that took place in a house we were staying in Henley (no names mentioned) which did indeed involve a policeman and had started when I was asked to tell the unfortunate bobby that a certain person was somebody else. Hence the line 'Tell them I'm somebody else'."
