JOHN MARTYN: May You Never (Island). Although singer-composer John Martyn's work is essentially folk-orientated, he has recently been touring with some of the heavier groups,1 with the result that his name is now reaching a far wider public. And for an artist whose appeal is still strictly limited, this is surprisingly commercial - a snappy number with some superb intricate guitar work, and sax adding a slight jazz flavour, plus John's intriguing and unique vocal style.
sitenotes:
1 Think of bands like Mott The Hoople, the Strawbs, Traffic and Brinsley Schwarz.
