Zanger/gitarist John Martyn heeft het de laatste tijd niet gemakkelijk gehad, want vorig jaar moest er een deel van zijn been geamputeerd worden. Misschien dat hij daarom meer over de zin van het leven nadenkt en op dit nieuwe album met een opmerkelijk spiritueel geladen nummer als My Creator aan komt zetten. Martyn wist in de jaren zeventig folk, jazz en rock op een unieke manier aaneen te smeden, maar zou uiteindelijk in zijn eigen creativiteit vastlopen . Op de meeste van zijn albums uit de jaren negentig is geen lijn meer te ontdekken. On The Cobbles mag dan ook best een verrassing worden genoemd. Hoewel Martyn met zijn vorige album Glasgow Walker al bewees op de goede weg terug te zijn, lijkt hij zich met deze nieuwe plaat eindelijk te hebben hervonden. Want hij pakt uit met tien bluesy nummers die opvallen door een bijzondere atmosferische lading en waarin met een minimum aan stijlmiddelen een maximum aan zeggingskracht wordt bereikt. Met als hoogtepunt het duet met Mavis Staples in Goodnight Irene.

The road back
Singer/guitarist John Martyn has been having a rough time recently, as last year part of his leg had to be amputated. Maybe that's why he is thinking more about the meaning of life and turns up with a remarkably spiritually infused song like My Creator on this new album. In the seventies, Martyn succeeded in blending folk, jazz and rock together in a unique way, but would eventually get stuck in his own creativity. On most of his albums from the nineties it is impossible to discern a development. On The Cobbles therefore may very well be called a surprise. Although Martyn proved to be on the right track back with his previous album Glasgow Walker, he seems to have refound himself at last. He launches out with ten bluesy tracks that stand out because of their atmospheric charge and wherein a maximum of expressiveness is achieved with a minimum of stylistic means. Highlight is the duet with Mavis Staples in Goodnight Irene.

Aloha used to be an NME-like Dutch newspaper magazine in the seventies that started out as Hitweek (1965-1969). The title started in 1969 but disappeared 1974. Its function was taken over by (Muziekkrant) Oor. In the late nineties however Aloha was revived in a Mojo format.
