The Bottom Line:
Obscure vinyl release of rare radio show
The subtitle '17 August 1977' is incorrect, the show took place three days earlier. (Perhaps the 17th was the broadcast date.) At the time John was touring Australia together with Bert Jansch.
This record popped up autumn 2021. It contains most of the tracks that were performed 14 August 1977 at the Town Hall, Sydney. Radio station ABC made a recording of this performance. It was included in The Island Years box set, as CD #10. Two tracks were left out for this item, One Day Without You and The Easy Blues; the final track Over The Hill was moved to the end of side A.
Stuart Duncan discovered these 1/4 inch tapes in the vaults of ABC Radio in Sydney. They were in poor condition but Stuart managed to digitize and remaster them. Universal licensed this material for the Island box set; they got a flat transfer and unfortunately did nothing to improve sound quality.
This vinyl "ABC-FM" release ("© 2021 • Made in Europe • All rights reserved") is in fact a bootleg, probably pulled from the CD. The label DBQP is also known as being a bootleg label.
