Oude wijn.

Vooral de kalmere tracks sluiten qua sfeer goed op elkaar aan: eenvoudige composities die goed blijven hangen (Under My Wing, One For The Road, Walking Home).
Martyn speelt voornamelijk akoestisch met sublieme begeleiding (Back To Marseilles); My Creator ademt een jazzy sfeer. Ghosts is een beetje Dr John Martyn the Nighttripper.

Translation

Old wine.

@ singer-songwriter John Martyn's latest studio album (On The Cobbles) did not come about easily -health problems-, but turns out to be a lot better than might be feared based on the preliminary information. (See Martyns discography in this Heaven from page 48 onward.) Especially the calmer tracks match well: simple compositions that stick in your head (Under My Wing, One For The Road, Walking Home). Martyn mainly plays acoustic with sublime accompaniment (Back To Marseilles); My Creator has a jazzy feel to it. The title track is the most funky one and is about a street fight. Another uptempo song, Go Down Easy, is eleven years old but was still lying on the shelf at producer Jim Tullio's. Baby Come Home was recorded earlier for a Frankie Miller-project and kind of makes you think of Taj Mahal. Ghosts has a hint of Dr John The Nighttripper. Don't expect stunning displays of guitar technique, but the relaxed mood and fragile vocals make On The Cobbles a highly enjoyable product. Suitable to recover from any Eurovision song contest. * * * * Hans van den Berk.
